Reinstatement of Grants will Help too Few-Bruton

A scheme of grants for the elderly to cover the cost of locks, security lights and chain reinforcing are available for distribution by local community groups. However, a number of problems have arisen:

• Voluntary organisations had only two weeks (closing date: 21st October) to apply for funds. This period was far too short and risks the grants only going to the “people in the know” rather than those who genuinely are in need of them

• Community groups are limited to allocating grants to only 15 people, rather than the usual 100. As no grant has been given out since April a back log has now developed. The small number of grants available will make little difference to the overall size of the waiting list

The Government’s move to axe the grant in the first place was short-sighted, but the way it has been reintroduction equally displays a lack of vision. As a community our goal should be for elderly people to remain independent in their own homes. These grants provide real protection and peace of mind to thousands of vulnerable pensioners throughout the country. The deadline must be extended, and the number of grants available must be increased.
